HYA Boy's Intramural Baseball - Spring

Intramural (In-House) Baseball Program  -   HYA’s Intramural Baseball Program consists of three (3) separate levels:   Pony (equivalent of tee-ball), Minors (coach-pitch) and Majors (“kid-pitch”).   Each of these levels are designed for boys ages 5 through 10 either not eligible for HYA’s travel baseball program because of their age or because they were not selected for a travel team.   Games for all intramural levels start in early May and run through mid/late June.   Practices start in early April.   Generally, Minors and Majors will have two (2) events per week, which may be on any weeknight or on Saturday, consisting of two (2) practices, two (2) games, or some combination thereof.   Our Pony level will generally have one (1) practice or game per week.   Generally, the Pony practices are scheduled for a weeknight, with the games on Saturdays.    There will be evaluations for all players in the Minors and Majors levels.   Evaluations are mandatory (see below for more information).

Pony (birth dates 5/1/05 - 4/30/07)  -   Intramural against other Hempfield teams, plus cross-over games against teams from St. Leos and Rohrerstown.   This level is a combination of tee-ball or coach pitch, depending upon the individual players skill level.   Coaches are encouraged to pitch to their players if possible.   Evaluations are not held for this age group.   Games consist of three (3) innings.   Every player bats in each inning.   The inning ends when all players for both teams have batted, regardless of the number of outs recorded.   While we do not conduct evaluations for our Pony players, it is required that you attend on the evaluation date (please see below for more information) in order to fulfill your fundraising obligation – either pick-up lottery calendars or pay the $40 opt-out fee.

Minors (birth dates 5/1/01 - 4/30/05)  -   Intramural baseball against other Hempfield (and, possibly teams from Rohrerstown, East Petersburg and/or St. Leos) teams.   Coaches pitch to players in this league.   No playoffs will be held.   This age group will generally be for the younger or less-skilled players within the age bracket and/or those with little (or no) experience.   Mandatory evaluations are held at this level (please see below for more information), the purpose of which is to ensure that teams are divided to achieve the most parity.   The evaluations are not a try-out!   If you are within the 7 to 10 age group and are not interested in playing in our Major League, you may choose to be placed in the Minor League – however, please keep in mind that a resounding majority of the players in this age group are 8 and under.   Regardless, attendance at the evaluations is mandatory!

Majors (birth dates 5/1/01 - 4/30/05)  -   Intramural baseball against other Hempfield (and, possibly teams from Rohrerstown, East Petersburg and/or St. Leos) teams.   Kids pitch to each other in this league.   Standings are maintained in this league and playoffs will be held.   This age group will generally be for the older kids within the age bracket and/or the stronger skilled players.   Mandatory evaluations are held at this level, the purpose of which is to ensure that teams are divided to achieve the most parity.   No player that is 7 or 8 years old will be permitted to play in the Majors if they did not attend the evaluations – No exceptions!   If it is determined that a player’s skill level (for that year) is best suited for our Minor League, that player will automatically be placed on a team in the Minors – there is no need to come to another evaluation.   Likewise, any player participating in the try-outs for one of our 10U travel teams who is not selected for a travel team will automatically be placed in the Majors.   Based on the evaluation results, coaches for the Major League teams conduct a draft to determine the teams – the draft occurs shortly after the evaluations.

2012 Intramural Evaluations:

Intramural (Major/Minor League only) evaluations will be held on Sunday, March 11th, 2012 at Lanco Fieldhouse in East Petersburg.   Minors players will be evaluated from 1PM - 2:30PM and Majors players will be evaluated from 2:30PM - 4PM.   Please have your player at Lanco at least fifteen minutes prior to his start time to permit ample to time to sign-in and fulfill your fundraising obligations (see below).   No cleats are allowed at Lanco; however, turf shoes or sneakers are acceptable.   Boys should bring their bat and glove.   A bat will be provided should you not own one.   While Pony players will not be evaluated, they are expected to come to Lanco Fieldhouse sometime between 1 PM and 4PM to fulfill their fundraising obligations (see below).

**NOTE for Pony Parents:  The most crowded times during evaluation day tends to be between 12:45 and 1:30 and again between 2:15 and 2:45.   Avoiding those times may result in smaller lines and lesser wait times.

Mandatory Fund-raising Obligations:

As in past years, we will again be offering two (2) options for fulfilling your mandatory fundraising obligation.   Please note each player MUST fulfill his obligations, up to a maximum of 2 players per family.   EX: A family with three (3) players need only fulfill fundraising obligations for two (2) players.   Fundraising obligations may be satisfied by selecting one of the following options (per player):

  1. Sell at least five (5) lottery calendars per player.  NOTE:  You can request additional lottery calendars for sale in groups of five (5).   For each additional booklet of five (5) calendars sold, you will receive a refund equal to $25.   PLEASE NOTE HYA WILL NOT ACCEPT RETURNS OF UNSOLD LOTTERY CALENDARS.   This applies also to booklets of extra calendars, if requested by the player, OR

  2. Pay a $40 opt-out fee.  Cash or checks are accepted.   If paying by check, please make the check out to “HYA” or “Hempfield Youth Association”.
